Maree  > Travel > Europe > 2009 Eastern Mediterranean Cruise
A 10 day cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean was hot and humid, but full of history. Coming from Australia, a relatively new country in the scheme of things, the merging of old and new in ancient countries like Rome and Greece continues to attract me - the beauty and delicacy of ancient columns and buildings juxtaposed with the often harshness of modern architecture and tourism seems to work, but often also seems quite jarring to the senses. These photos are chronological and follow the cruise itinerary. They take you from Rome to Messina in Sicily, to Athens and Mykonos in Greece, Ephesus and Kusadasi in Turkey, Rhodes and Santorini in Greece, and finally Naples in Italy.

My trip journal is at http://mareeconway.com/tripjournals.

Rome - we arrived early in the morning, and did a bit of wandering until our room was ready. We stumbled upon the Fori Imperali Museum and decided to have a look. This is a view from Fori Imperiali Museum across Trajan's Markets.
A view of the Markets and Trajan's Column.
Another view of the Markets.
Not quite sure what this is, but assume it's a cistern of some sort for the Market.
This little street was around from the main markets, but reminded me of a shopping mall.
The other side of the shopping street, with evidence of restoration work underway.
Quite fascinated by these clumps of what I assume to be ancient stone.
Walking back to our hotel, we saw this building that looked like a church, tucked away in a side street. An internet search identified the street as Via Panisperna and the church as the Church of San Domenico and Sisto.
The next day, we headed for the Colosseum, and stopped to look at Trajan's Column that we had photographed yesterday from the Museum. This is a close-up of some very intricate carving on the base of the column - a battle scene.
