Maree  > Travel > United States > 2004 Alaska
We headed to Alaska in 2004 to go on a long awaited cruise (for me) and hike (for Alan). A great holiday that combined some communing with nature in the mountains around Talkeetna and a 5 star cruise from Seward to Vancouver via the Inside Passage. Alaska is very different and well worth the visit.

Maree > Anchorage Railway Station, where we went north to Talkeetna, and then south to Seward. I had never seen a railway station where there was no raised platform from which you boarded the train. This one had no platform; you climbed aboard from ground level.
Maree > Engine Number 1, the first Alaska Railroad steam engine.
Maree > Alaska Statehood Monument. Our hotel is in the background.
Maree > View from the train on the way to Talkeetna. This is taken from the Dome car where you were a bit higher than normal.

Maree > And, well, a bit of fun in Talkeetna.
Maree > Eye of Denali Inn where we stayed, a self-catering bed and breakfast. It was unlocked, and you let yourself in. A bit of a change from living in a city.
Maree > This was the private entrance to our room, which was in the basement I guess, but very comfortable.
