Maree  > Travel > Europe > 2009 Eastern Mediterranean Cruise
A 10 day cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean was hot and humid, but full of history. Coming from Australia, a relatively new country in the scheme of things, the merging of old and new in ancient countries like Rome and Greece continues to attract me - the beauty and delicacy of ancient columns and buildings juxtaposed with the often harshness of modern architecture and tourism seems to work, but often also seems quite jarring to the senses. These photos are chronological and follow the cruise itinerary. They take you from Rome to Messina in Sicily, to Athens and Mykonos in Greece, Ephesus and Kusadasi in Turkey, Rhodes and Santorini in Greece, and finally Naples in Italy.

My trip journal is at http://mareeconway.com/tripjournals.

And another view from the Greek Theatre - towards Cape Taromina.
Much prickly pear here.
Another view back towards Messina.
And one more view looking down from the Greek Theatre.
I think this is a saracen castle which overlooks Taromina. More prickly pear, this time with graffiti!
Wandering at the top of the Greek Theatre, here we found some shade and some great views.
Coming down from the Greek Theatre, a view of the saracen castle again.
In the amphitheatre, which provides another example of modern and ancient coming together. While this was clearly an ancient site, it seemed to lack the atmosphere of other sites probably because it is so clearly used today, and comes complete with lights and a new stage.
But, some ancient parts still remain to remind us how long this theatre has been around.
